Community and Country

Today’s City to Sea adventure was about more than connecting with Country, it was about noticing the people, places and stories that have become part of our beach adventures.

On every visit to the beach, we have noticed a familiar face, our local seagull lady, who we often see feeding the birds. She comes between 10 – 10.30 am each day and we decided we would like to thank her one day for looking after our seagulls.

She was so excited and surprised by our thoughtful gift. Her joy was contagious, and we could feel the buzz amongst the children and educators. Such a small act of kindness had brightened someone’s day, and it felt good to know we had made a difference.

During our adventure, we also discovered a beautiful piece of timber that had been burnt. The children carefully observed the markings across the wood and noticed that they looked similar to the Aboriginal markings on one of our educator’s shirts.

This sparked curiosity and wonder. We talked about the markings, shared stories and imagined together how they might have come to be. We wondered about the stories held within the timber and how Country can leave traces and patterns for us to notice and explore.

We spent time sharing stories on the beach and acknowledging the Country on which we are so fortunate to play, learn and explore each day.

We are incredibly grateful for our City to Sea adventures. They give us opportunities to build genuine connections with our community, explore Country, notice the changing natural world and discover that kindness, curiosity and connection can be found in the simplest of moments.
