The Sandpit Splash Zone Continues

26th February 2026

This morning the sandpit was thoughtfully reset, transforming the space into an inviting splash zone designed to provoke curiosity and wonder. Funnels, tubes, pipes and buckets were carefully arranged, a simple yet powerful invitation to explore water as a medium for thinking.

In the spirit of a Reggio Emilia approach, the environment acts as the third teacher. The placement of materials was intentional, offering open ended possibilities rather than fixed outcomes. Water flowed, sand shifted, and the children immediately began constructing theories.

As water travelled through winding tubes and poured from funnels, children experimented with cause and effect. They adjusted heights, redirected flow, negotiated shared ideas and observed what happened when more or less water was added. Mathematical concepts emerged naturally, measuring, volume, capacity, comparison and spatial awareness, alongside rich scientific inquiry.

The sandpit became a living laboratory. There was collaboration, problem solving and sustained engagement as children revisited and refined their designs. Each adjustment reflected evolving thinking, what happens if we lift this higher, why is the water slowing down, how can we make it flow faster.

Through this ongoing exploration, the children are not simply playing with water, they are building hypotheses, testing ideas and expressing their understanding through materials.

We look forward to seeing how this dynamic space continues to evolve as the children’s thinking deepens and the splash zone invites even more discovery.
