Exploring Wire as a Language of Expression
24th February 2026
This week, the children were invited to explore wire as a medium for art, not simply as a material, but as a language.
Inspired by a Reggio Emilia approach, we see materials as having their own voice. Wire offered endless possibilities for expression through twisting, stretching, looping and bending. As small hands manipulated the cool, flexible strands, ideas began to take shape in unexpected and imaginative ways.
This hands-on experimentation became a catalyst for playful innovation. There was no predetermined outcome, only curiosity, problem solving and creative thinking unfolding in the moment. Children discovered how the wire responded to their movements, learning how much pressure to apply, how to create balance, and how to transform a simple line into form.
As the wire shifted shape, so too did the children’s ideas. A simple loop became a pair of glasses. A twist evolved into a spiral nest. Sculptures emerged slowly, accompanied by rich conversation, collaboration and bursts of excitement.
Through this experience, the children began to see that materials themselves can communicate. Wire became more than a material, it became a tool for thinking, imagining and expressing theories.
We look forward to continuing this exploration, allowing materials to guide us and celebrating the many languages of learning that unfold within our Preschool.
