Aunty Michelle's Visit

Tuesday 17th March 2026

Tuesday we had a special visit from Aunty Michelle. Some of the children already knew Aunty from last year, while for others it was their first time meeting her.

During her visit, we had the opportunity to yarn together about different ways we can naturally colour water at preschool for our messy play. Aunty shared many wonderful ideas, including using coal, mulberries, dillybag (dilnerra) berries, and tea leaves.

Aunty also spoke about wattle and how it can be used as a natural soap. She explained that on her next visit, she will bring some wattle and show us how to wash our hands in the bush.

We learned three new songs and dances together: Wombat Wobble, Highway Number 1, and On the Bus to Uluru. The children were highly engaged and enthusiastic while participating.

Aunty brought a bag of special artefacts to share with us. She showed us a wooden toy, and Bobbi suggested it looked like a lizard. We also saw a basket made from tree roots and a coolamon made from bark, which Aunty explained was traditionally made by mothers to help collect berries.

Aunty then shared a special possum skin. Vinnie asked, “What is that from?” and Ren responded, “It’s a possum skin.” We learned that possums have a small patch of skin on their tails that helps them climb. Aunty also showed the children a male emu caller. The children made thoughtful guesses, with Norah suggesting “a didgeridoo” and Annabell thinking it might be “a telescope.”
