Our First Adventure

Our City to Sea adventures officially began on the 5th of November, and what an exciting start it was!

The children were buzzing with excitement as we boarded the light rail, eyes pressed to the windows, counting down each stop. The city slipped away behind us, tall buildings, busy streets, and the hum of everyday life, as we rolled closer and closer to the coast.

Then, a cheer rose up: “Look! The ‘Newcastle Beach’ sign!” The tram lights flickered, and we disembarked, ready for our walk to the beach. We followed the winding pathway, laughter echoing through the tunnel that led us to the sand. The sound bounced back at us, louder and happier each time, the sound of adventure.

The children sat and watched the waves, their eyes wide with wonder at the rolling surf. We ventured to the canoe pool area, where the tide was so low the pool only contained wet sand, the perfect place to play. We drew pictures in the sand, of waves curling, seagulls soaring, and shells on the sand.  We had children teaching us how to flag races like they do at NIppers, cheering each other on.

When it was time to head back, sandy feet and sun-kissed smiles filled the tram. The chatter didn’t stop, stories of waves, tunnels, and flags carried us all the way home.

It was a day we will remember for a long time, the first of many adventures still to come.

A special thanks goes to the International Child Care College for supporting us in getting this new program off the ground.
