Today, the children were introduced to the art technique of sgraffito, a process that involves layering paint and then scratching through the top layer to reveal the colour beneath. This idea sparked great curiosity and enthusiasm among Lenore, Hazel, Jojo, Victoria, and Sumw.
The children eagerly began by applying paint onto their hands and rubbing it across the paper, delighting in the sensory experience of the cool, smooth texture. Once the surface was covered, they used their fingers to etch lines, shapes, and patterns into the paint. As they scratched through the top layer, they discovered the contrasting colours underneath, watching their drawings magically appear.
What was especially engaging was how the children repeated this process over and over again. After creating their drawings, they would cover them with more paint, only to begin scratching anew. This cycle of drawing, covering, and redrawing demonstrated their persistence, curiosity, and willingness to experiment. Each layer became part of an evolving artwork, rather than a final product.
Through this experience, the children explored not only a new artistic technique but also important learning dispositions. They showed creativity in their mark-making, problem-solving as they figured out how much pressure to apply, and resilience as they embraced the idea that their drawings could change and transform.
This exploration of sgraffito supported the children in expressing themselves in dynamic and meaningful ways, while also encouraging them to take risks and engage deeply with the creative process.
