Painting Sunflowers

Today, our sunflower inquiry came to life as we brought fresh sunflowers into the preschool. The children gathered around, looking closely at their bright yellow petals, tall stems and intricate centres.

With paint and paper ready, the children became artists and observers, using the sunflowers as inspiration for their own live paintings. They looked carefully, noticing shapes, colours, lines and patterns, and translated what they saw into their own unique representations.

Some children focused on the delicate petals, while others were drawn to the sunflower’s centre and the movement of its leaves and stems. There was no single way to paint a sunflower, each artwork reflected the child’s own perspective and interpretation.

Through this experience, the children explored the idea that art is a way of looking closely, wondering and making meaning. The real sunflowers became more than a subject to paint; they invited the children to slow down, observe and express what they noticed through one of the many languages of children.
