Transforming Schema

04/11/25

A play schema/urge is a repeated play pattern that children naturally engage in as they develop an understanding of the world around them.

One of those urges is the transforming schema. Children who are exploring the transforming schema have an innate curiosity about change and a fascination about how objects can change in appearance and substance. These children love to mix substances and wonder at the changes in colour, texture and appearance. They may also like to paint and draw on their bodies.

Children who explore the transforming schema are learning about cause and effect, develop their fine motor skills, use their senses to make scientific observations, develop creative and critical thinking skills, and building scientific and mathematical skills such as predicting, hypothesising, estimating and problem solving.

We definitely have a number of children currently exploring this schema at the moment and it is sooo awesome to observe and provide the ingredients for their curiosities and learning through play.
